Appel named interim dean for the College of Agriculture and interim director for AAES
Auburn University professor, researcher, former department chair, interim associate dean for research and interim assistant director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES) Arthur Appel has been named interim dean for College of Agriculture and interim director of the AAES, effective July 6, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Timothy R. Boosinger has announced.
“Dr. Appel’s administrative expertise and research success have prepared him well for this position,” Boosinger said. “His leadership will ensure that the good work of AAES and the College of Agriculture will continue uninterrupted as the University conducts a national search for a new dean and AAES director.”
Appel will succeed Dr. Paul Patterson, who has served as acting dean and acting director for several weeks. Before becoming the interim associate dean, Appel served as chair of Auburn’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. He joined the Auburn faculty as an assistant professor in 1985 and was promoted to associate professor in 1990 and professor in 1997. He has also held a research appointment with AAES since 1985.
“I’m pleased to have this opportunity to work with the faculty and stakeholders of the College of Agriculture and AAES to forward our great missions,” Appel said. “I am particularly excited about building bridges on campus and throughout the state for the good of the college and experiment station.”
Appel is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles with a B.A. in biology. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in urban entomology from the University of California at Riverside. His research interests are in the control of urban insects, insect biology, and insect physiology and ecology.
