Auburn Ag Week 2016 set for March 28-April 1

Visual graphic for Ag Week promotionAUBURN, Ala. –Activities ranging from a carnival to free biscuits on the concourse are on the schedule for the Auburn University College of Agriculture’s Ag Week 2016 celebration, set for March 28-April 1.

The week will kick off Monday, March 28, when Auburn’s Block and Bridle and Young Farmers clubs sponsor a petting zoo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Student Center green space.

On Tuesday, March 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., the college’s Ag Council will host a carnival at Ag Heritage Park on South Donahue Drive. Free and open to all, the carnival will feature a number of games, an inflatable slide and bounce house, a mechanical bull, pie-baking and pie-eating contests, free cotton candy and more. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for $5.

Fried chicken fingers and fried catfish will be on the menu for the Sigma Alpha–hosted Ag Week picnic, set for Wednesday, March 30, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., on the Comer Hall lawn. Chicken and catfish plates—complete with fries, coleslaw, hush puppies, a brownie and a drink—will be $7 each on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also on Wednesday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., the LifeSouth bloodmobile will be in front of Comer for a blood drive sponsored by Block and Bridle in memory of agricultural communications senior Michelle Bufkin’s father, David Bufkin.

Thursday’s events begin with Ag Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to noon on the Haley Concourse, with College of Agriculture clubs and organizations handing out biscuits and increasing the university community’s awareness of the importance of agriculture. At 4 p.m., as part of the E.T. York Distinguished Lecturer Series, Robert Bertram, top scientist in the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau for Food Security, will present “The End of Hunger: From Vision to Reality.” The free lecture will be in The Hotel at Auburn University auditorium.

Ag Week 2016 will culminate on Friday at the Ham Wilson Livestock Arena on South Donahue when the Auburn Ag Ambassadors host their annual Get AgTive field day for local elementary students.
